Positively Bob Dylan

Fine Bob Dylan stuff. Since 1997.

An anniversary albums flashback

Will Bob Dylan release a new album soon? Rumors are circulating as always, in the meantime let's take a look back at the album anniversaries of the past five decades, beginning with Volume 6 of the Bootleg Series which was released 10 years ago...

The Bootleg Series Vol. 6, Live 1964: 2004 – 10 years
The Philharmonic Hall concert on Halloween 1964 was part of the tour following the release of Another Side of Bob Dylan, his last acoustic only album for 28 years to come. The first official release of the historic concert that had been available before on Bootlegs for decades features four duets with Joan Baez and a first hint of what would come next, new songs that later appeared on his legendary follow-up album "Bringing It All Back Home", such as "Mr. Tambourine Man".

World Gone Wrong: 1994 - 20 years
Following the slightly overproduced "Under the Red Sky" Dylan stepped back and returned to his home studio to record several traditional folk songs that resulted in two consecutive albums, "Good as I been to you" and "World gone wrong", his first acoustic only albums in three decades. The latter one included renditions of songs that Dylan had listened to in his early years, songs that Woody Guthrie had played as well as old traditionals off the Smithsonian "Anthology of Folk Music".

Real Live: 1984 – 30 years
Dylan's first live album of the 1980s is a compilation of songs performed during the "Infidels" tour with former short-time Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor. Not one of his best live albums, but if you are a fan of this period, it's still solid. In "Tangled up in blue" Dylan even adds a minute of completely new lyrics. The Bootleg "Real Live Outtakes" includes more songs of the tour.

Planet Waves: 1974 – 40 years
Recorded in only a few days, the "comeback album" with The Band is a collection of laid-back tunes lyrically focused on (his) domestic life, including of course the all-time classic "Forever Young" – in two different versions –, a song Dylan had written for his younger son Jakob.

The Times They Are A-Changin': 1964 – 50 years
It was fifty years ago that Bob Dylan released his first album of originals only. A terrific effort considering that his third album had to follow one of the greatest folk albums of all-time, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. This time around, Dylan's lyrical focus was social protest, more intense than on any other album he ever released. Nearly all of the ten tracks became all-time classics, many of which Dylan still performs live today.

We are all curious to see what 2014 will bring, Columbia told Rolling Stone there are plans for new Bootleg Series volumes, there are also rumors on the Internet that Dylan is planning to return to the studio this year. What do you think/hope/expect?
