For his “profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power” Bob Dylan received a Special Citation at the Pulitzer Prizes 2008 on Monday. It was the first time the Pulitzer Prize Board awarded an art form once dismissed as subversive. So the times have changed again and Rock ’n Roll has finally broken through the Pulitzer wall to join the exclusive club of icons in literature, journalism, classic music, and jazz. Congratulations, you got a good deal!

By the way: The photo shows Jesse Dylan, who accepted the 2008 Pulitzer Prize Special Citation for his father Bob Dylan, from Richard Oppel, co-chair of The Pulitzer Prize Board.

It was another night of success for Bob Dylan at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards. Could it have been predicted? Well, considering the fact that his latest studio album “Modern Times” reached the peak of the Billboard charts, yes. Plus during the past few years Dylan has been a regular guest and winner at various award shows.

In the category “Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance (for a solo vocal performance, Singles or tracks only)” Dylan’s “Someday Baby” made the race against Tom Petty, Neil Young, Beck, and John Mayer. The song was also nominated in the category “Best Rock Song”. And “Modern Times” won the award for “Best Contemporary Folk/Americana Album (Vocal or Instrumental)”. In this category Dylan beat Jackson Browne, Mark Knopfler & Emmylou Harris, Rosanne Cash, and Guy Clark.

So while the times are not that modern anyway, Dylan just keeps on doing his thing as always. The difference however is that this time ’round people don’t boo him anymore, they give him awards. And that’s about exactly how it should be.
You can post your opinion/rating of the song here.

Bob Dylan has received an honorary degree by the University of St Andrews in Scotland. He was made a Doctor of Music at this year’s summer graduations. According to St Andrews principal, Dylan’s “most popular work from the 1960s and 70s still are relevant today and in particular his lyrics are still part of our consciousness”.

Dylan has only ever accepted one honorary degree before, from Princeton University in 1970. St Andrews is Scotland’s first university and the third oldest in the English-speaking world, founded in 1413.

“It seems appropriate that his second such degree should come from Scotland’s oldest university, since Scottish border ballads and folksongs have been the inspiration for some of his melodies, and his great song ‘Highlands’ is an elaborate riff, or descant, on Robert Burns.”

(Professor Neil Corcoran of the School of English in his laureation)

Here’s the complete laureation.
